Starting something new is an arduous task—even starting small. Uncertainty, fear, doubt, or indifference cloud the energy & commitment we put into making changes in our life. These inner responses hold us back and often keep us from risking that first step toward our desired outcome.

The word “small” can allude to insignificance, or of little value. When it comes to our doing, “small” tends to be perceived with minimal enthusiasm. It takes a certain kind of patience and wisdom to embrace the value of small. At our core, we long for the end result, the big picture, the grand finale. We are programmed for growth, but often resist the process.

What makes starting small an art? Much like adding color to a canvas, a small start draws depth, purpose, and meaning from within, bringing ideas to life. Maybe it is abstract at best, but that small change is yours to craft and refine—frameless and full of possibility.

The value of a small start rests in its resiliency. It is repeatable by nature, removing the complexities, and shedding the pressure of perfection. A small start holds promise for something new and malleable. Think of a spark. A spark is packed with potential. Even in its smallness, it illuminates presence and hope. Small things grow, and slow growth forges new paths.

As you consider the possibility of starting small, the most foundational place to begin is with your inner self; your thought patterns. Your thoughts precede your actions. When you change a thought, even in a small way, you begin to alter the effects that thought has on you and the behaviors & decisions that follow. And then you begin to notice. New patterns & rhythms occur that spark insight. With each new insight you foster greater commitment, confidence, and clarity.

What does starting small look like for you right now? It's OK to have only a partial view. Step out in uncertainty, not quite knowing how it all will land. Use your artistry & give yourself the space to explore the potential of starting small, with brush in hand.
